Driving in Italy

Your Questions answered

Generally it will only take a few days to get used to driving on the right.  Many of the road signs are the same as at home and in our experience, people adapt very quickly.

Here are a few things we think you should know about before you get behind the wheel.

• Documentation - always carry your insurance certificate, registration document and driving licence with you and if you don't have a new style photo licence, make sure you have your passport.
• Speed limits - generally they are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90-110 km/h on dual carriageways and what we would call b-roads, and 130 km/h on motorways. (This reduces by 20 km/h in the rain.
• When to use your horn - Italian drivers are very fond of using their horns, but the official line is that you should use them to warn others of your presence, particularly on blind corners in rural areas, but they are banned in cities.
• Speeding - you should be aware that speeding offences are subject to on the spot fines. If you get caught and fined, make sure you ask for an official receipt for the payment.
• Seatbelts - are compulsory in the front and rear, where fitted.
• Drinking - the legal limit for driving is lower than the UK, so if you're not sure, don't risk it. Even if you're 0.05% over the limit, you'll be fined and could go to prison.
• Lights - dipped headlights should be used in poor visibility during the daytime. They are compulsory in tunnels, on motorways and dual carriageways and on out of town roads.
• Minimum age - is 18 for cars and motorcycles.
• Basic equipment - visibility vests are compulsory if you have to walk on (or beside) the motorway, for example if you break down, so make sure you have one for yourself and any passengers. A warning triangle is also compulsory.

The roads in Calabria are well maintained and are far less congested than in the UK and there is an excellent motorway system.

The above information is intended only as a guide, local laws, speed limits and regulations should be followed al all times.
